Synopsis:
Otar (Otia) Katamadze was a remarkable figure in the contemporary history of the Batumi Drama Theatre. An exceptional young actor, director, and playwright, he made an enduring contribution both as an artist and as a citizen.
Director Gabriel (Gaga) Goshadze did not choose to stage Otar Katamadze’s Name It Whatever You Like solely because of the playwright’s exceptional creative talent and personal qualities. A closer look at the play’s architecture, atmosphere, and characters reveals the profoundly tragic vision of our own time, the fate of the artist in a technocratic world emptied of its essential meaning.
One further point deserves mention. Otar Katamadze’s play possesses that timeless quality which characterises the remarkable tradition of the Theatre of the Absurd, represented by playwrights such as Samuel Beckett, Eugene Ionesco, and Slawomir Mrozek.
